Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then located multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was probably human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.

A senior political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
