A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
